Mission: Secrets

On:

"I understand, Doctor," Marius said. "We will hate to lose you, even temporarily, but the safety of your children is paramount. There's a shuttle waiting for you and your family, be ready to leave within the hour."

"Thank you for understanding, Captain," Hemsley said. "I need to get my children to safety."

"Of course. Let me know once you are safe and we will figure things out. Good luck, Doctor." Pontmercy stood from his chair in his ready room as the doctor made her way out the door, and he frowned. She was doing what was best for her family, but this was an uncertain time and he hated losing people. Sighing,he tapped his comm badge. "Lieutenant Stokes, please report to my ready room."

Marty looked up from her desk at the captain’s summons and stood up. “On my way Captain,” she said before leaving her office and making her way to the Captain’s ready room. Hitting the buzzer, she waited to be admitted.

"Enter," Marius called from within the room.

“You wanted to see me Captain,” Marty said standing at attention in front of the Captain’s desk.

"I did, yes," Pontmercy said and gestured to the seat in front of his desk. "Please, have a seat." He waited for her to comply, and then began again. "I just was informed that Doctor Hemsley is leaving the station with her family, at least for the time being. She feels it is the safest for her children, and I cannot disagree."

“Well, yes,” Marty said with a nod. “I can see her point of view, I’m just glad mine aren’t here as well.” Marius nodded.

"Indeed." He sighed, glancing from the top of his desk back at the Lieutenant.

"Well, we now are in need of a CMO. We have several qualified people on board, but I feel that you would be the best fit to fill in. You excelled at the Academy, have practical experience, and have a good relationship with the crew. Would you consider being moved to the Acting Chief Medical Officer position?"

Marty looked stunned for a minute before she spoke. “Of course I will,” she said nervously. “I mean, it’s like riding a bike,” she giggled.

"This, of course, is a temporary job transfer... At least for now. I will make it permanent if the need arises. I've already called for a replacement for you in the Counseling department, and she will be arriving later today. I know you'll do a good job, Lieutenant, and there are plenty of people to offer assistance should you need it."

“Yes, Captain,” Marty said with a nod. “The medical department is more than competent, I should not have any problems moving into the department.”

"Good, good." Marius was satisfied. "The timing couldn't be worse, and I am sorry for that. It is going to be a challenge in the coming days, so make sure you reach out to whoever you need to to make sure you have everything in order. With us moving the Starbase and rescuing the Admiral, your services will be in high demand. Is there anything you can think of that you need, at this time? Of course if you feel you need to look everything over first, I completely understand."

“I’m sure there will be something later but right now, I just need to look over the department and make sure we’ll be ready,” Marty said intently.

"That sounds good," Marius said as he stood. "Well I appreciate your willingness to step up, Doctor," he said with a grin. "I have to admit, that sounds good, doesn't it?"

Marty nodded and grinned appreciatively. “Yes, sir and thank you for the recommendation,” she said with a smile. He laughed.

"Of course, you deserve it. Let me know if you need anything," he said again. "Dismissed, Doctor."
