Mission: Secrets

On:

Marius heard the news that the away team had jumped to their coordinates and docked. Admiral Bradley, badly mistreated, was alive and recovering...and he was extremely happy to hear it. With a sigh, he tapped his comm badge.

"First Lieutenant Thrace, I know you're probably exhausted, but please come see me before you retire for the night."

"On my way." Charlotte answered, she'd been getting changed out of her combat uniform and was wearing some comfortable fit civilian clothes, grabbing a combadge and pinning it onto the red sleeveless top she was wearing she headed up to the Captain's ready room and stepped inside "You wanted to see me?"

"I did, yes," Marius said as the woman entered. "Thanks for coming so quickly. Please have a seat." While he waited for the woman to comply, he continued. "It seems as though you all had quite the... Adventure. Give me a brief rundown of what happened."

"Everything as clockwork, exactly as we'd planned." Charlotte said "We jumped into their dimension, made our approach on low power in a small craft, detonated an EMP, made entry into the facility, rescued the Admiral and escaped by transporter and then a return jump. Once on our way back Doctor Ryan and Doctor Dale treated the Admirals condition." she took a moment to think, choosing her words carefully "To anyone out there sir, this is going to be viewed as mission accomplished and a win. But between you and me, it doesn't feel like a win at all. It was too perfect, a facility of that size should have been crawling with Synthulans, EMP or no EMP and we hardly saw any of them. It doesn't feel like a rescue it's more like they handed him over to us and let us get away."

Marius took her words in and frowned, the weight of all that had occurred showing on his face.

"Have you been made aware of what has been going on since your departure?"

"I haven't no sir." Charlotte said

Marius grit his teeth.

"While we were moving the base, we received word that there was a massive coordinated attack by the Synthulans against the Federation. They hit most of the Federation worlds, leaving massive casualties...and we believe completely destroyed Federation Command, the academy, and almost every ship and active crew. Last I heard...they were moving against some of our enemies as well."

Charlotte had known that there was always going to be a counter move from the Synthulans, she'd planned for it which was why she'd wanted the base moved, her gamble had been that the Synthulans were primarily interested in Admiral Bradley and would have tried to hunt him down first but clearly she'd miscalculated, the Synthulans had launched what sounded like a pre-emptive strike against the Federation on a scale that hadn't been seen before. "Which enemies?" she asked after a moment, it would likely sound odd but this was Charlotte's training kicking in "Which enemies did they hit and where?"

"We still do not know where, our reports are spotty at best for now. But the Romulans and Cardassians were hit. The USS Denton sent in the report before it's destruction. One of the many things we will have to uncover in the days to come."

"Ok..." Charlotte said rubbing some sleep from her eyes, though she was tired she could sense that the whole situation had just gotten substantively more dangerous "No one hits the Federation this hard without having a plan to keep us down once they've put us down and we've seen their strength, I don't fancy our odds in a fight... so what do you want to do Marius?" she'd dropped the term Captain because this wasn't a staff meeting at this point, it was closer to a session with the counsellor just without the counsellor.

"We are establishing a Federation headquarters here on The Obsidian. If no other heads can be found, Admiral Olvera will become the Commander in Chief. With the extreme threat we face, I'll be relying on you and your department very heavily. So there is one thing you can do for me."

"It'll be the hardest of fights." Charlotte said "Extreme threats require significantly more caution, we don't have the capacity to go toe to toe with the Synthulans or anyone else for that matter considering the hit we took. If we're going to fight this then we need to start by running."

"I agree with you, wholeheartedly," Marius said. "We will be meeting after you all rest to determine our course of action." He shifted in his seat, staring at the woman before him. "When you first came into the Obsidian, I gave you the rank of 1st Lieutenant because you were being reinstated, and there was a lot of pressure from outside sources because of your past. You and I both know that what you did was necessary, and so I fought them for a long time." He shook his head. "Anyways, I've been speaking to Admiral Tabolt about the whole crew, but you especially. Time and time again you have proven yourself dedicated, loyal, and willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. This last mission proved just that. We need that now, more than ever."

Marius reached into his desk and withdrew a small box, and set it down on the desk.

"We can do this more officially if you'd prefer, but I think you have earned this. I know that technically you should be given Marine Captain first, but I don't think that will cut it. You are going to be playing a vital role here, and a Marine CO should have a rank befitting that status. So, if you're willing, I'd like to promote you to Major."

"I was never one for officially." Charlotte said with half a smile taking the box. "Before I go and get some rest I do have one thing to inform you about." she was a little nervous having never done this before "In my after action report I'm nominating Erin Couldis to receive the Christopher Pike medal of valor. She went into that facility the least experienced and qualified member of the rescue team, her conduct was exemplary and she put herself at great risk to ensure the success of the mission. Marines and security do that day in day out, counsellor's don't and that is what makes her more than worthy of the medal." Marius blinked.

"Noted, thank you Major," he said with a small grin. "I know you are exhausted, and we will have more to discuss after you rest. But I wanted you to know that I am proud of your work, and more than happy that you are here."

"I'll go get some sleep then." Charlotte said "And I know I've said it before but so should you by the looks of it." Marius nodded.

"You're probably right. I will soon," he promised. "Dismissed, Major."
