The Intelligence department was still, under the circumstances, the busiest department on the base. They'd gone from damage assessment of the Federation to analysing subsequent actions and none of that had lifted the mood. Some might have looked at the attacks on 'states' that were generally or historically regarded as the Federation's rivals and breathe a sigh of relief but those were people that weren't trained to read between the lines. To those who knew the intricacies of the rivals there was far more reason to worry now than there had been before. V'Lar was working on the latest round of intelligence updates when Charlotte stepped in.
"What's all this about Romulans and Cardassians being hit by the Synthulans?" Charlotte asked
"It's not as general as that." V'Lar said
"So I guessed go on." Charlotte said
"These are the Romulan and Cardassian worlds confirmed as hit by the Synthulans." V'Lar said bringing up the holographic map with markings on the worlds that had been hit "What do you notice?"
Charlotte looked at the markings for a moment and then smiled as she clocked it "All the Romulan worlds are those that are opposed to the Empress."
"Correct." V'Lar said "And the Cardassians?"
"Well judging by the fact that Cardassia itself is on the list... Detapa Council?"
"Yep, these are the civilian government leaning worlds." V'Lar said "The attack on the Federation was across the board, these are selective. And then it gets worse."
"I'm not going to like this am I?" Charlotte asked
"Probably not." V'Lar said as she changed the image, it was still of the Quadrant but now identified a number of positions along the Federation border.
"Tell me that's not what I think it is." Charlotte said
"It's exactly what you think it is." V'Lar said pointing at the Cardassian border first "Cardassian 3rd, 5th, 7th and 12th orders massing there with others coming from deeper within Cardassian Space. Over in Romulan loyalist space the Tal'Shiar fleet is massed, the Tzenkethi, Gorn, Tholians it's all the same. This isn't coincidental either, this smacks of conspiracy."
"So a highly advanced civilisation attacks us, leaves Starfleet in ruins and the Federation vulnerable." Charlotte said "And then in come all of them to carve up what's left?"
"It's the way to do it." V'Lar said "You don't destroy the Federation by just laying waste to our worlds and ships."
"No you need to keep the foot on the throat and that means occupation of territory." Charlotte said "How old is this?"
"It's recent." V'Lar said
"The longer we wait the tighter the noose is going to get and the harder it's going to be to get out." Charlotte said she sighed "Ok keep monitoring and let's hope the Cardassian's don't make the logical move for another day or so."
