Mission: Secrets

On:

Marius looked over the figures, and tried to determine their best course of action. He knew that the Delta Quadrant would be a risk, but a better option than staying here for the Synthulans. He sighed, and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"Lieutenant V'Lar, please report to my ready room."

V'Lar didn't take that long to get up to the ready room, she'd been monitoring the latest updates from across Federation space and nothing that she'd seen had changed the equation in her opinion, stepping into the ready room she stood there "Captain." she said

"Lieutenant, thank you for coming so quickly. Please have a seat," Marius said, motioning to the seat across from him

V'Lar sat down and looked at the Captain "What can I do for you sir?" she asked.

"I know that there hasn't been much time since our last Senior Staff meeting, but have you and your staff come up with any information for me?"

"We have a survivor count which is getting a little higher." V'Lar said "We're not talking huge numbers and we are mainly talking freighters, passenger vessels and the like but we are getting a picture of just how surgical a strike the Synthulans managed to pull off. We've issued an encoded message out to our deep space exploration missions telling the ships to stay out there and await further communication. We're also beginning to verify any Starfleet ships that suddenly report in following the survivor call."

"That's good to hear," Pontmercy said. "I'm assuming it's not so high as to worry about space issues?"

"Not at the moment but given the logic involved in this move." V'Lar said "Even if we get to the point of having space issues on ships and the station and assuming that quantum slipstream drive is a feasible propulsion method we're talking a handful of days of being overcrowded in that eventuality."

"I am sure everyone will understand," Marius said. "Gathering the troops and keeping everyone safe is of utmost importance. There may come a time in which we need to establish a headquarters somewhere, but that's a problem for the future." He looked at V'Lar before speaking again. "I also wanted to thank you, Lieutenant, for your hard work and dedication to the safety and security of this crew."

"I wouldn't say that's a 'may' sir I'd say that's going to be an imperative." V'Lar said.

"You're probably right. Once we arrive in the Delta Quadrant we can search for a suitable location. Do you have any ideas?"

"Tactically speaking sir." V'Lar said after a few moments of thought "I would go to the Ocampa homeworld, it's a five planet star system so potential for resources, we know the Ocampa's planet meets the M class criteria except for having no water and we know the Ocampa live underground. That's a golden opportunity on multiple levels."

"I suppose with our replicator systems that isn't anything we'd have to worry about. We could offer them protection for the use of their planet. That's a good idea Lieutenant. I'll take it to the Admiralty."

V'Lar nodded and sighed "At some point sir, when you have the opportunity." she said "It would be helpful for someone to look over the museum section of the base, especially since my adopted daughter's turning it into a memorial." Marius nodded.

"A memorial is a great idea, and I'll put someone on it. Most of the decks will most likely be taken for something else, but she's not wrong. We must never forget what happened to our people.*

"Trust me if she has anything to say about it no one is going to forget anything about it." V'Lar said

Marius chuckled slightly, and then grew serious.

"There's something else I'd like to discuss with you, V'Lar. Your performance, to be precise."

"Should I be worried sir?" V'Lar asked

Marius kept his serious expression for a moment and then cracked a smile.

"On the contrary. You have consistently gone above and beyond for this crew, put the needs of the Obsidian above your own, and your work has done numbers to protect this crew. We are lucky to have you," the Captain said. He stood, and walked across the room. "Because of that, I am proud to promote you to Lieutenant. Congratulations Lieutenant!"

"Thank you Captain." V'Lar said, that was going to make it a double family celebration a little later,

"It is my pleasure," Pontmercy said as he pinned the pip onto her collar. "Along with this, id like to present you with the Starfleet Intelligence Commendation Medal. You are an excellent officer, and I'm proud of the work you have been doing." He finished speaking, and quickly removed the ribbon, and after pinning it to her uniform he shot her a small smile.

"Congratulations," he said and took a few steps back.

V'Lar's expression didn't really change, she understood why medals and honours were given out but wasn't personally a fan of them, it likely had a fair bit to do with her Vulcan side, yes she took pride in what she did but didn't view it as anything special. If anything it was reminder of how much there was still to do and of the number of challenges that were about to land at her door. "Thank you sir." she said

"You are welcome," the Captain said, and slowly made his way back to his seat, sitting down and turning to face her again. "We no doubt have many challenges ahead of us...but I'm glad you're here with us Lieutenant."

"Many challenges would be an understatement sir." V'Lar said "However this is a very odd crew and that may just be what helps." Giving a small chuckle, Pontmercy nodded.

"We may be odd, but we put up one hell of a fight." He sighed and then said, "before I dismiss you, is there anything else we should discuss?"

V'Lar shook her head indicating no "The oddity isn't that we put up a fight everyone does that." she said "There's an old theory. Basically that at some point in their life everyone goes through what they call a crucible, something that either makes you stronger or breaks you. In Starfleet terms that can apply to individual officers or to a crew as a whole. The oddity is that this crew's crucible is coming, we all know it, going off to the Delta Quadrant to rebuild the Federation, it sounds like a longshot, but there's not one doubter on this crew that we know of not one dissenting voice. My Vulcan side would tell you hope is an irrelevant emotion, my Romulan side would tell you that hoping for the best is a fool's game, but my human side knows that hope gives birth to many things. This crew is odd because it has an incredible amount of positivity and they don't say something can't be done. There's many a crew that can't say that and that includes the most well known. Let's not lose that." she smiled "Permission to leave?"

Marius smiled at the woman, thankful for her words. It was true; the Obsidian crew was excellent, and he was lucky to be their Captain.

"Permission granted, Lieutenant. You are dismissed."
