Mission: A New Beginning

On:

After the away team had returned to the station, crews began beaming the Ocampa onboard. This was a massive feat and it took hours to accomplish. He was thankful that he had crew members, headed up by his Chief of the Boat, to assign living arrangements to them all. As the Obsidian was nowhere near at capacity, there was plenty of room.

After his meeting with his new Assistant Chief of Intelligence Marius ordered himself a drink from the replicator and stood at the window, looking at the planet below. If someone has told him even a year ago that he would be in the Delta Quadrant, one of the last Captains in Starfleet, he would have laughed in their face. But alas, here he was.

The chime of his door rang, which broke his train of thought. Draining the last of his beverage, he set the now empty glass on the desk, and called for whoever it was to enter. Seeing that it was Doctor Hemsley, he smiled and motioned her to come in.

"What can I do for you," he asked her once she had settled? Hemsley frowned, obviously wrestling with something.

"Captain, the Ocampa are woefully unprepared for living on the surface," she said.

"That's true, but we will have plenty of time to-"

"There are things we can teach them, sure...but their whole species has developed while living underground. They are going to need to be studied and cared for as they adjust to living elsewhere."

"It will be a long process, but they definitely seem willing."

"They do, I can only imagine what it must be like to have something you dream of for generations suddenly come to pass."

Marius nodded. He could tell that the Doctor wanted to say something, but was holding back.

"What's on your mind, specifically," he asked her?

"I... I would like your permission to remain with the Ocampa, my husband and daughter too. They need to be studied, helped, and guided through this process and this is something I feel able to do."

"You no longer wish to be Chief of Surgery?"

"I am so thankful for the opportunity, Captain, "but I am feeling led to help the Ocampa now." Marius digested this news for several seconds before speaking.

"Granted," he said finally. "I'm not going to say that I'm pleased to be losing you, but you have earned the right to do what you feel is correct for you. I wish you all the best, Doctor."

"Thank you sir," Amanda said as she stood. "I appreciate that."

"Good luck doctor."
