Mission: A New Beginning

On:

Hannah had literally just stepped from the promenade, still laughing to herself about that familiar alien face, into the turbolift. She was leaning against the wall as the lift headed up towards the operations platform, her mind was still processing what she'd just been through, what she'd experienced. One of the curses of her photographic memory was that she could now see the formula as plain as she could see the turbolift door in front of her, her mind was drawing the mental picture, trying to put together the building blocks of the materials that were needed to make the reaction happen. She sighed as the doors opened and she made the short few steps to the ready room door and pressed the bell.

Marius had been in his ready room for a few minutes, and had answered a few messages while he waited. When his door chimed, he cleared his throat, saying,

"Enter."

Hannah stepped inside staying fairly nonplussed for the few moments that the doors to the ready room were open but once she heard them close behind her she grinned ever so slightly, her eyes lighting up a little. "Would you like the good news, the good news or the good news sir?" she said.

Marius waved her forward, and then motioned for her to sit once she came close enough.

"Honestly, all of it," he said with a slight chuckle. "I could use the good news around here after everything that has happened."

"Well we don't have a security leak." Hannah said "Should have seen it coming but turns out we were getting prodded down a path by an old alien friend we bumped into a few years ago." she gave the Captain a moment to process that there was no immediate internal risk "Second bit of good news what myself Galaway and McGregor found on our little operation is a method of terraforming a planet a heck of a lot faster than standard operating procedure would allow for. Given the potential applications for its misuse it's easy to see why it's classified information." she took a breath "But we can do it. We can take that information and theory and make it happen on the planet out there and we can do it without posing a risk to the station."

Marius blinked, processing the information that Hannah has just given him.

"I'm going to circle back on the first bit of news, but I'm glad to hear that. As far as the terra forming, that's excellent news! How long are we talking? The Ocampan people are going to want the news."

"Well it's complex, no doubt about that but it's all really going to come down to balancing the ingredients so to speak and we've got the notes that deal in the theory of it so a few days, maybe a bit longer it just all depends on whether what Doctor Marcus thought would work does work." Hannah said "It is in relative terms though nothing more than placing an explosive device on the planet and detonating it." Marius nodded.

"That's great news, thank you Ensign. I'm assuming Galaway and McGregor are working on this now?"

"Yes sir." Hannah said "They're currently fabricating the casing and the mechanism itself. I will in the next few hours begin the process of balancing the chemicals and then once everything's complete it'll be ready to go." Marius nodded again, satisfied with her answer.

"So tell me... what was it like? Traveling to the past, I mean? It had to be pretty surreal."

"That's the word for it." Hannah said "You try to treat it like just another mission, or like it's a holodeck program but nothing can prepare you for the giddy reaction to something like Kirk's Enterprise turning up."

"Fascinating," Marius said honestly. He leaned back in his chair and observed the young woman before him for a moment. Finally, he spoke again. "Now then... Back to the security leak, or lack there of. You mentioned an alien friend?"

Hannah's smile was a little broader than it had been, she practically giggled still somewhat surprised herself at this part "Yes sir." she said "Do you remember an alien who a few years ago who just prior to the Zaj incident threw us back in time and across space to a planet that according to our records didn't exist? An alien who it's fair to say owed us one."

Marius blinked. That was a time in his life he had tried to forget, despite the crews heroics so much had been lost... For him especially.

"Refresh my memory," he said after a moment.

"We technically broke the temporal prime directive at the time." Hannah said "Though I'd say saving a civilisation from destruction was worth it. It did result in Charlotte and Commander Haines ending up in prison, or as they likely refer to it therapy considering the difference in their relationship in the before and after sense." she was aware she was gossiping a little "The alien in question gave us the pieces of the puzzle to build the weapon we used to defeat the Zaj."

"Oh...of course," Marius said as he began to remember. "I wasn't directly involved, but I remember their help. So... They found us way out here?"

"Yes sir." Hannah said "It makes sense, a species that has displayed the ability to move objects through space and time would theoretically possess knowledge of things from the past and be able to impart that in a careful manner."

"Too bad it didn't wish to act before the Synthulan attack," Marius said, his voice trailing off. "But no mind. I appreciate the report, Ensign. Is there anything else?"

"No sir." Hannah said

Marius nodded, and stood.

"Thank you Ensign, and excellent work as always. The three of you will receive a commendation for your actions. It will go a long way to ensuring the Federations survival here. Dismissed."
