861 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission: Obsidian
On:
Celine gave up on her task and left her temporary station and headed for where the Counselor was seated behind a console of her own.
"You got a minute," she asked the woman?
“Of course,” Marty said looking up. “What’s on your mind?”
"Actually," Celine said, "I would love to sit down and chat for a few minutes. I think the conference room is free...I know it is way too big for the two of us, but if you're game I think that would be good."
“Sure,” Marty said clicking off her console. “Let’s go.” Celine nodded, and followed the woman. The walk was a short one, and within a few moments they were seated across from each other. Celine set the data padds she had been holding down onto the table, and slid one across the surface towards Marty.
"I was going over what we know about Arbazan and their leadership, as well as the Calvary and its mission. Something isn't adding up. Adding to that the fact that we were unable to reach their leadership, and the craziness with the transporters... I was wondering if you could go over the information with me?"
“I definitely will,” Marty said with a nod. “Have you read my report to the Commander about my meeting with the Cardassian Pav'oi?”
"I have not," Celine said, "I was not given that one. What did you think of her," she asked?
“She seems sane,” Marty said with a sigh. “Story’s a bit out there but I believe what she says but why she was there is still a mystery.” Celine frowned, biting the corner of her lip as she thought without realizing it.
"Do you think she was telling the truth," she asked? "Why was she there?"
“She would only say that she was knocked out and when she came around she said the crew was gone and she was just there,” Marty said with a shrug.
"Is it possible that that actually happened?"
“I guess it’s possible,” Marty said thoughtfully. “But it doesn’t explain why she was on the Calvary to begin with.” Celine pursed her lips.
"Do you think it has anything to do with the Arbazan mission?"
“I believe that will be hard to connect without her confirmation,” Marty replied. Celine sighed.
"And then how could you confirm it anyways. Yeah... you're right." She glanced back down at her padd. "I was trying to determine if our messages were being received by the Arbazan government and ignored, or if there was signal interference. The fact that our tricorders weren't working is suspicious, but I couldn't find any evidence or reason we were being blocked. Maybe you can see something I missed."
“That’s all we can do is back track from this point on and see what we can come up with,” Marty said with a nod. “She doesn’t like the idea of being held in the brig but I told her until we figure out where she came from and why she was there, she’d never have free rein of the ship.”
"She may be a defector, but she was still an active part of the enemy attacks," Celine said in agreement. "Did you see the signal trace patterns? I was wondering if you could see evidence of interference. I certainly couldn't."
“I wasn’t able to see anything as well,” Marty said with a sigh. “If she is a defector, are we going to take responsibility for her?”
"I doubt that will ultimately be up to us, from whenever they decide to release her. That will be up to Starfleet Command and whatever they decide. I just hope that they are careful...there most likely is a lot more going on than what meets the eye."
“Agreed,” Marty said. “Just wish we knew the whole story.” Celine nodded, understanding. She glanced down at the padds on the table, frowning.
"I know we are missing something. I guess I'll have Science take a look at it and see what they come up with. What are you up to next?"
“I’m going to bring the Cardassian some comfort items, she asked for pillows and blankets,” Marty said. Celine was taken aback.
"She didn't have those to begin with?"
“She had nothing,” Marty said with a shrug. “She just asked for that and something to read, don’t sound much like requests someone who brought down a ship and killed the whole crew would make to me.”
"Probably not," Celine agreed, "but what concerns me is that basic necessities weren't already provided...I know we aren't a fully functioning ship these days but those are basic requirements and standard protocol."
“True,” Marty said with a sigh. “Keep me in the loop, will you?” Celine nodded as she stood.
"I will. I'll be looking into it," she said. "I'll let you know." With a smile she turned and left the room.
Marty smiled before returning to her station.
