Even though there was optimism, even though there was a plan, there was always a risk that it could all come crashing down around their ears. Maddy's train of thought was very much along these lines as she went in search of Ewan Barker, if there was one person she didn't want this rescue endeavour to hinge on it was him, not because she doubted his desire to see the Admiral rescued but because it was a situation where they'd be asking him to do something that would likely redefine his life's work. She found him sitting at one of the tables on the promenade looking over various PADD's.

"That kind of day is it?" Maddy asked
"Something you want?" Ewan asked
"Oh there are plenty of things I'd like to say to you, but I've had years to get over that." Maddy said "And now isn't the time or the place."
"So..." Ewan said
"The key to rescuing the Admiral lies in the engine on the Inquiry class ship docked here." Maddy said "I don't fully understand how it works but what I do understand is that it requires someone to interact with it, someone who has what would be best described as manipulated DNA."
"Augmentation which is against Federation law and Starfleet protocols." Ewan said, then it clicked "You want to use Codi."
"I would never say don't ask her." Maddy said "But yes Codi is the only person on this base who can do this without anyone getting themselves into trouble, can it be done if she says yes?"

Ewan took a moment to think, in that almost swashbuckling, charming manner that Maddy had always found intriguing about him, then he nodded "Yes it can be done if she agrees." he said "But you know what you're asking?"
"I do." Maddy said "And if there were another way I wouldn't."
"When you get the DNA bring it to my lab." Ewan said "I'll ask her then."
"Thank you." Maddy said
"For what kissing my Daystrom prize goodbye?" Ewan asked
"Maybe." Maddy said "But who needs a medal to know that they've done something?"
"Scientists... doctors..." Ewan said
"You're really not helping yourself." Maddy said with the slightest giggle.
"Probably not." Ewan said
