Mission: Secrets
Jenna Haines stepped off the shuttle and onto the metal deck of Starbase Obsidian. The moment her feet hit the ground, she felt a chill run through her, not from the temperature but from the eerie stillness of the station. The expansive corridors stretched out before her like a ghost town, with only a handful of crew members wandering about, their faces etched with seriousness and concern. Jenna had always prided herself on her ability to read the mood of a room, so she took a mental note of the atmosphere—something wasn’t right.
As she adjusted her duffel bag and moved further into the station, she heard her name echo in the distance. “Jenna!” It was a familiar voice, one that made her heart leap. She looked up to see her brothers, Jordan and Josiah, striding toward her with wide smiles. The sight of her brothers brought a wave of comfort, and her own smile widened as she greeted them warmly.
“Hey! It’s been too long!” Jenna exclaimed, pulling them both into a tight hug. It had been two years since they had last seen each other, and it felt like a lifetime. They stepped back, taking a moment to drink in each other's presence.
“Look at you!” Jordan said, ruffling her hair playfully. “You’ve grown even taller. How is that even possible?”
Jenna laughed, feeling the warmth of their reunion settle in. “I could say the same about you two! How’s life treating you here?”
After a few moments of catching up about their lives, Jordan’s expression shifted slightly. “So, Joel is also stationed here, but he’s currently gone on a mission,” he informed her, his tone serious.
“Oh, I didn’t know that. I actually contacted Ist Lieutenant Thrace before I arrived. She told me to settle in and get to know the other marines,” Jenna replied, her curiosity piqued. "She said you would fill me in on a need to know basis."
Josiah nodded, leaning in as if sharing a secret. “Thrace and her team are on a rescue mission to save Admiral Bradley. It’s a big deal. On top of that, we are preparing to move the base, so the station is pretty empty right now.”
Jenna’s intrigue deepened. “It sounds like there is a lot going on here right now." She looked from Josiah to Jordan. "Moving the base?"
Jordan quickly filled her in on what the current situation was and that all hands were helping in preparing for the move. Jenna offered her assistance should they need it.
" They’re trying to use a unique program that’s never been tried before. It's both exciting and a little nerve wracking at he same time."
"I've done a lot of things in my time." Jordan spoke up. "But this is a huge endeavor. We are all stepping up our game and working a bit out of our comfort zone but we have an excellent crew and we will succeed."
“Sounds like quite a challenge,” Jenna said, her mind racing with possibilities. “I’d love to help out if I can.”
Josiah exchanged a glance with Jordan, a hint of excitement in his eyes. “Actually, that’s perfect. We could use all the hands we can get, especially with the base’s current state.”
They spent a few minutes discussing the base’s operations and the unique program that was being implemented, but it was Josiah’s next words that made Jenna’s heart skip a beat. “Oh, I almost forgot! Jude is on board too!”
Jenna’s eyes widened with surprise and delight. “Jude? No way! He must be twenty-two or twenty-three by now. The last time I saw him, he was heading to the academy! I can’t wait to catch up!”
Jordan chuckled, clearly amused by her enthusiasm. “You two always had that connection. It’ll be great to see you both together again.”
As they walked through the station's quiet corridors toward her quarters in the marine barracks, Jenna felt a mix of excitement and nostalgia. Serving with her brothers again was more than she had hoped for after all they had experienced on Ghost Station but the time was right. They needed to be a family again. She glanced at her brothers, who were chatting animatedly about their latest training exercises.
“It’s so good to see you guys,” she said, her voice warm. “I’ve missed this. I’ve missed you.”
“We’ve missed you too, Jenna,” Josiah replied, his tone sincere. “It’s just not the same without you around. We’re glad you’re finally here.”
When they reached the marine barracks, Jordan pulled out a small device and pointed it toward the door. With a beep, it slid open, revealing a modest but cozy room. Jenna stepped inside, taking in her new surroundings. The walls were painted a muted gray, and a small window offered a view of the stars beyond. It felt like home already.
“Make yourself comfortable,” Jordan said, leaning against the doorframe. “We’re a comm call away if you need anything.”
“Yeah, and remember, we’re here to help you settle in,” Josiah added. “We can’t wait to have some time together once things calm down around here.”
“Definitely,” Jenna agreed, her heart swelling with gratitude. “I can’t wait either. It feels good to be back in the fold.”
With one last smile, her brothers turned to head back to their duties. As Jenna unpacked her things, she thought about how much had changed since she last saw them. Yet, some things remained constant, like the bonds of brotherhood and the thrill of adventure.
Once she was done unpacking, Jenna decided to explore her new home. She wandered through the halls of Starbase Obsidian, absorbing the atmosphere. She noticed the occasional crew member, their faces serious, as if carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Jenna’s instincts kicked in, and she made a mental note to keep an eye on the morale of those around her; it was part of her nature, after all.
In the days that followed, Jenna settled into her new routine. She attended briefings, met her fellow marines, and learned more about the rescue mission that had everyone on edge. Though the station felt quiet and tense, she began to find her place among the crew.
One afternoon, while she was in the common area, Jenna heard laughter and chatter coming from nearby. She followed the sounds and discovered her brothers and a few other marines gathered around a table, sharing stories and enjoying a rare moment of levity. The sight warmed her heart, and she felt a wave of belonging wash over her.
“Hey, look who it is!” Jordan called out, his voice booming with enthusiasm. “Come join us, Jenna!”
As she approached, Jenna realized how important this moment was. Despite the challenges that lay ahead, the camaraderie of her brothers and new friends reminded her that she was exactly where she was meant to be.
And as the laughter echoed through the hall, Jenna couldn’t help but feel a surge of hope. Starbase Obsidian may have felt like a ghost town at first, but with her brothers by her side and a mission to pursue, it was starting to feel like a home full of possibilities.
