The conversation she'd had with the Captain still echoed through V'Lar's head as she and Ruby stood waiting at the docking berth. It hadn't been a conversation she'd ever imagined having, yeah sure she'd expected her Romulan heritage to come up at some point but she'd never thought for a minute that the game the crew of the base had found themselves in would lead to this move, but that was where it had taken them. V'Lar's mind was also calculating the ship that had brought her parents to the base into the equation - a Defiant class was by this point out of date, having long been surpassed by other classes, but the small and original tough little ship still had potential uses. Even with V'Lar's hands, gently on her shoulders Ruby was a bundle of energy bouncing up and down on her feet really keen to see her adoptive grandparents, despite everything going on, all the tension this was something that was seemingly very normal.
"So excited." Ruby said with the slight trace of the giggle.

The airlock opened and out stepped the two they were waiting for V'Lar's father T'Lev a half human, half Vulcan with brown hair styled in the predictable Vulcan manner, he wore traditional Vulcan robes that were a tartan styled black and dark blue checkerboard pattern. Next to him wearing much more casual clothes was a red haired, hazel eyed Romulan woman, this was T'Kes she was V'Lar's mother. First things first the formalities of Ruby hugging both of them followed by V'Lar doing the same.
"You look..." Tilev said when he saw V'Lar's expression
"Good." T'Kes said jumping in
"We've got quarters arranged for you." V'Lar said "And security has agreed to provide you with an escort for the first few days or so. If you need anything in that respect contact Lieutenant Haines."
"Where are the quarters?" Tilev asked
"Ruby?" V'Lar said
"Right this way." Ruby said skipping ahead to show the way, perfectly timed as T'Kes fell behind a couple of steps with V'Lar while Tilev occupied Ruby.

"Now tell me seriously what's going on?" T'Kes asked
"A Starfleet Admiral got kidnapped by an advanced civilisation of beings, we've got a rescue operation underway but we're starting a fight that we can't finish... yet." V'Lar said "And we know that starting this fight puts the Federation's future right on the line. It's existential for us now and that means continuity of operations, continuity of governance. Can anyone claim to act on the authority of something that doesn't exist?"
"What are you asking?" T'Kes asked
"Meet with Captain Pontmercy and the Admirals, there's a balance that's going to need to be struck. We're going to have a war to fight and it's not going to be easy but we can't lose sight of what we're fighting for. This crews mission directive includes rebuilding the Federation, well we can't do that if the Federation doesn't exist."
"I get it." T'Kes said "But I can read tension a mile off. You and the rest of this crew all have work to do and that seems more urgent. I'll meet the Captain when it's convenient."
"I'll let him know." V'Lar said
