Mission:
Secrets
Location: Angel Sickbay
Timeline: current
The doors to Sickbay hissed open, and Tom rushed inside, his uniform still stained with blood and soot. In his arms, Admiral Chris Bradley hung limp, his body broken, his face pale and slick with sweat. His breathing was shallow, ragged—every rise and fall of his chest a battle.
Ryan barely registered the medical staff moving around him as he eased Chris down onto the bed. His hands lingered for a moment on his best friend's shoulders before he forced himself to step back. His heart pounded. This wasn’t just another patient. This was Chris.
He’d already run through every scenario in his mind—every other possibility. This was the only way.
"We do this now, or we lose him," Ryan said to Maddy.
"You don't have to tell me twice." Maddy said, she'd been waiting for this, she'd been going over it in her head constantly. Placing a cortical monitor on side of the Admiral's head she brought his vital signs up on the monitor screen. Picking up a hypospray she placed it next to the Admiral's neck "Administering lethal dose." she injected the substance into the Admiral.
Tom watched as Bradley's vitals flatlined, and felt the room’s tension spike. He immediately began his work, using a combination of micro-scalpels and nanoscopic tools to extract the dormant nanites. The Synthulan design was intricate, with layers of self-repair mechanisms. Each step was a battle, requiring split-second decisions and precise coordination.
The first complication struck an hour into the procedure. The nanites began to reactivate, detecting the invasive tools. Their adaptive programming triggered a countermeasure: a rapid release of toxins into the Admiral’s bloodstream.
“Damn it!” Tom swore, scrambling to counteract the toxin. “They’re evolving faster than anticipated.”
"We'll see about that." Maddy said grabbing a hypospray with an entirely different toxin in it and injecting it into Bradley "If these nanites want a race I'm more than happy to give them one."
Tom grinned. If there was ever a battle or he needed his own Doctor, he would want Maddy on his side. As the countertoxins took effect, finally managed to isolate the remaining nanites. Using a specially calibrated containment field, he extracted them from the Admiral’s body.
"Maddy, Let's start his heart back up." Tom said
"Be warned the reaction will be quick." Maddy said, she picked up the surgical hypospray that had the Borg nanoprobes in it, this wasn't an unfamiliar technique to her she'd done it plenty of times over the years. Finding the Admiral's rib cage with her fingers she measured the gap, marked it and injected the hypospray's needle right between them.
Tom watched as Maddy injected Chris. It was only a matter of time before something would happen. He watched the screens as the Borg nanoprobes did their work as Chris' body jumped. His neural activity was returning to normal. Within moments, Chris could be heard taking a breath. "Hot damn." Tom said. He scanned over Chris. "Broken bones and ribs healing. He might need an eye patch for a bit, but otherwise, I think we are out of the wood for now."
"Let's hope so." Maddy said, she was using her eyes to examine and fingers to feel the Admiral's rib cage and spine confirming all the regenerative stuff was happening "Assuming the tissue regeneration maintains a constant rate I'd say it's a good prognosis." she attached a small monitoring device just beneath the Admirals armpit it would monitor the nanoprobes and the Admirals recovery and alert her if anything was up, it was a precautionary measure. She tossed Tom a small container of gel "Bio neural stitching." she smiled "Rub it on his open cuts it'll deal with them and get some energy into his muscles."
Tom laughed. "I've used this before, on Chris as matter of fact." he said as he rubbed it on Chris' open wounds. "So much easier than the olden days where they had to stitch with thread. I remember taking the History of medicine course in med school and wondering how they could have been so primitive for so many years."
"He'll probably be awake in a few minutes." Maddy said "I don't see a problem with him being conscious but given what he's been through I'm prescribing a sedative to knock him out when he sleeps if that doesn't help I'll look into other methods and he'll need a couple of follow up appointments but he's all yours."
Tom exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "Good. Because if he wakes up and starts barking orders before I get some coffee, I might sedate him myself." He glanced at Chris, watching the slow, steady rise and fall of his chest. "Thanks, Maddy. I mean it. We almost lost him." He thought a moment. "I'm pretty sure there is an Admiral that I need to contact and let her know the status."
