Mission: Secrets

Marius checked his list, determining who was next on his list to meet with. Chief of Security, Jude Haines. Taking a sip of coffee, he tapped his comm badge.

"Lieutenant Haines, please report to my ready room."

Jude heard his name, smiling when a couple of his officers teased him saying he was in trouble, referring his captains request akin to being called to the principals office. He walked through the base calm and relaxed. He wasn’t one to worry unless he had done something to warrant it. He rang the buzzer at the captain’s ready room and entered when he was given permission.

Walking over in front of the desk, he stood at attention. “You wished to see me, Captain.” He said quietly, Captain Pontmercy gave nothing away as he looked at him.

"I did, thank you for coming Lieutenant. Please have a seat," Marius said, indicating that the man should sit in the chair across from him. When he did, Marius looked at him for a moment before speaking. "How is your department holding up with everything going on," the Captain asked?

“As well as can be expected.” Jude said honestly, “We’re short handed like everyone else but my crew gives more than a hundred percent. They understand the severity of things.” Pontmercy nodded.

"I wish it was as simple as contacting command and asking for more staff. Unfortunately we are stuck with what we have right now, as of course you know." He sighed. "Lieutenant, I called you here today because I wanted to let you know that I've been observing you and your actions the past few months...and especially the past few days. I have to say, I'm impressed."

Jude’s eyes widened. He hadn’t expected him to say that he didn’t know what he had expected but he did his job. “Thank you, Sir.” He said quietly. “I take my position seriously, I know how important security is to the station.”

"I know you do," Pontmercy said. "It is evident. And it is appreciated. How long have you been in Starfleet, Lieutenant?"

“I entered Starfleet Academy when I was sixteen.” Jude said quietly. “I advanced in school quickly and graduated from the Academy after three years. So I served on starships until I came here, seven years.” He wondered where this was headed.

"And in that time have received numerous reports of excellent service," Marius said, reading over the mans file. He looked up at Jude. "Because of your efforts here along with the rest of the crew, we have survived the onslaught of the Synthulans and have made it to relative safety. Your dedication, hard work, and determination has not gone unnoticed." He stood up, and motioned for Jude to do the same. Grabbing up a box, he crossed the short distance until he was standing in front of the younger man. "For your service to the Obsidian, it is my honor to award you the Starfleet Security Commendation Medal, as well as the Captain's Commendation ribbon. Congratulations, Lieutenant." He took each one out of the box, and pinned them onto the mans uniform.

Jude was stunned. He blinked a few times and then a smile crossed his face. “Thank you, Captain. This means a lot to me. I serve because I love what I do and I want to do my part to keep everyone safe, not for medals or promotions. It means a lot but a person needs to love the job not for medals and pins.” He smiled then. “It does mean a lot.”

"It is my pleasure, Lieutenant. Thank you for everything you have done for us. I have come to expect greatness from you, and you have not disappointed."

“I will continue to give my best.” Jude said with conviction. “You can count on me and my team.”

"As I know you will," Marius said. He clapped the man on the back, and then grew formal once more. "You're dismissed, Lieutenant. Congratulations again."

Jude stood and left, a smile coming widely across his face. He was feeling so good that the problems at hand were set aside for the moment.
