Mission: Secrets

On:

Marius looked through his list, happy with what has been accomplished so far that day. His crew was on top of their game, ready and willing to do whatever was necessary. He saw the next name on his list, and tapped his comm badge.

"Lieutenant Haines, please report to my ready room."

Joel had just finished with a shower. He’d been working out, burning off some frustration over what was going on and felt much better, positive that they could win this.

Quickly dressing he headed out of the quarters he shares with Celine. He made a note that he wanted to spend an evening together, in their quarters with no outside interruptions.

Once he arrived at the ready room, he rang the buzzer and waited patiently,

"Enter," Marius called, and nodded as Joel entered the room. "Thanks for coming, Lieutenant. Please have a seat."

Joel took a seat and looked at the captain. It was very rare for him to be called to the captains ready room. Normally, he lived in the marine area. “Thank you, Captain,” For a moment he wondered if there was bad news but he had seen Celine just this morning and his family was here on the base. He decided to stop second guessing and wait for the captain to speak.

"I wanted to check in and see how you were doing? I know you have your hands full, but this has been a trying time for all of us."

“Things have escalated.” Joel agreed. “It has been quite unsettling but we are strong and determined to not let this beat us. We will regroup and give them a fight they don’t expect, Captain.” Marius nodded.

"I know you will. I believe that you all will help us get through this." He shifted in his seat. "What are your plans for training the Marines you have to face what we have to come?"

“To prepare them as much as we can for what we know as well as the unknown.” Joel explained. “To not sugarcoat what we are facing and to make certain they are trained to their fullest.”

"Excellent." Captain Pontmercy stood, and took something out from a drawer. With a small smile he crossed the room until he was standing in front of Joel. Motioning for the Marine to stand, Marius looked down at the box he was carrying. "It is normally customary for your Department Chief to do this, but given everything that has happened I wanted to do this myself." He looked back up at Joel before speaking again. "For your outstanding courage, your hard work, and dedication to the crew of the Obsidian, it is my pleasure to promote you to Marine Captain." He smiled again, and placed the new pups onto Haines' collar. "Congratulations, Captain."

Joel stared at him for a moment thinking he hadn’t heard him correctly but then his eyes met the captains and he could see the seriousness on his face. “Thank you, Captain.” He said quietly. “I am honored.”

"You deserve it, wholeheartedly," Marius assured him. "Also, your service to the Obsidian has earned you the Expeditionary Award," he said as he withdrew the ribbon and pinned it onto the Marines uniform. "Keep up your excellent work."

“Yes Sir.” Joel nodded. He looked at Captain Pontmercy for a moment. “I didn’t expect anything but I appreciate my hard work being noticed.”

"Of course. I know that we have a hard road ahead of us, and I am glad that you are here with us," the Captain said honestly. He took a seat again and looked up at the Marine. "My door is always open if you need anything."

“I appreciate that, Captain.” Joel said with a nod. “It feels good to be back among family, especially during this time. We’ve all faced the odds stacked against us before and together we will succeed again.”

"We will, indeed" Pontmercy said. "Dismissed, Captain," Marius said with a smile.
