Mission: Secrets

Victoria peered through the view screen, her eyes squinting through the smoke and blinking alarms. Her shuttle, the Osiris, had taken severe damage as she had escaped the Synthulans attack on Starfleet. She had left Earth three days ago for a scheduled meeting with Captain Nathaniel Yancy of the USS Reliant, but as she was on her final approach she had watched it being destroyed. She escaped death by minutes. She quickly rerouted, but not before being pursued by smaller craft.

She had managed to lose them in a Nebula, but sustained heavy damage. She thought herself lost until her emergency hail was picked up by the Starbase Obsidian. Inputting the coordinates, she was finally on her way to safety.

Dakota received word that Admiral Monroe had survived the attack and would be docking shortly. She sent a message to the other admirals to report to her office.

Michael walked into her office, nodding at her and taking a seat. It seemed that several Starfleet Officer's were finding their way to the Obsidian, and he was extremely happy about it.

“This is good news.” Dakota said with a smile. “I didn’t even want to hope for any survivors from the admiralty,”

"She will be an asset, too," Michael said. "With us rebuilding, having her as the head of the Starfighter Corps will be invaluable."

“These are the things we need to have the crew see.” Dakota said after a moment. “It will encourage them and give them hope.”

"And hope's an infectious thing." T'Kes said from the doorway "And anything that says the Federation's not down for the count right now is a small victory."

Chris walked in behind T'Kes leaning on his cane for support. "Monroe surviving changes things," he mused. "She's not just any admiral—she's a fighter. She won't sit on the sidelines and let this happen again."

Victoria managed to dock the shuttle upon entering a secure code, quietly whispering a prayer of thanks that she had made it. Willing her nerves to calm down, she gathered what few possessions she had, and disembarked from the ruined shuttle. She glanced at a computer terminal, knowing that she needed to meet with the Admiralty onboard sooner rather than later.

It took several moments, but finally she was shown to Admiral Olvera's office.

“Come in!” Dakota called out to her. “Please have a seat. Can I get you something to drink?”

"I apologize for my appearance," she said ruefully, "but I am here, and reporting for duty," Monroe said. "Tea would be lovely, thank you Admiral," she said gratefully.

“Damn good to see you, Monroe,” Chris said, his voice gruff but genuine. “We heard about the Reliant. Hell of a thing. You’re lucky to be here.”

He eased himself into a chair, watching her closely. “And you’re reporting for duty already? You just barely survived a Synthulan attack, and your shuttle looks like it lost a fight with a warhead. You sure you don’t need a minute to breathe first?” Victoria smiled sadly.

"In times like these, we cannot afford to sit and rest. We have a lot of work to do."

“We have quarters assignment for you.” Dakota spoke up. “And I will make certain someone has a meal brought to you as well. We can do this later if you like.”

"Thank you, Admiral," she said to Olvera, "but I can rest later. I am okay."

T'Kes calmly sat down this was a good sign, the more survivors they had the better, it wasn't much but it was perhaps the most important thing, it gave them the first parts of a foundation.

"The priority for us at the moment is getting somewhere safe.' Dakota looked to Michael. "I'll leave it to you to explain our plan to Victoria." Michael cleared his throat, and looked at Monroe.

"We know that the Synthulans have technology that far outpaces our own. We have decided that the safest place for us to be, at least for the foreseeable future, is in the Delta Quadrant. The plan is to take the Obsidian and establish a new headquarters on Ocampa." Victoria let out a surprised breath.

"I would say that seems extreme, but given everything that has happened, I think the safety and rebuilding of Starfleet is paramount."

"We need to regroup." Dakota explained. "And find out what and who we have to fight with. At the moment, we are outgunned, it would be suicide."

"The first rule of battle strategy is that you want to choose the battlefield." T'Kes said "And if it comes to a fight we're going to want a winnable fight and that means being somewhere away from the various opportunists." Victoria nodded, thinking.

"Well you know my area of expertise. What's the status of the fighter department here on the base? Do we have pilots and ships?"

“We’ve had a few come on board.” Dakota said quietly. “Survivors just like us. Our numbers are not high but we have hope they will increase.”

"We can manage," Victoria said confidently. "You'd be surprised what damage can be done with a few excellent pilots."

"And the element of surprise rides with us." T'Kes said.

"I've always believed the power for us is in our faith and belief in ourselves." Dakota said in a strong voice. "We need to hang on to that as much as we can."

"Tell me about it." Chris said.

Victoria glanced around the room before speaking, her emotion almost getting the best of her. She managed, with difficulty, to tamp it down after a moment.

"What can I be working on in the meantime?"

"A stock take." T'Kes said, knowing that that was exactly what was going to be needed "Number of fighters, types, condition of them, amount of fighter ammunition we have. We're in a fight we better know exactly what we've got to fight with."

"You got it," Monroe said, squaring her shoulders. "Now, unless there is something else, I think I need a shower and a nap," she said with a small smile. Giving them a nod, she quietly exited the room, so start the process of obtaining some quarters.
