Mission: Obsidian

On:
Jordan walked into Jude's security office in Starbase Obsidian, feeling a mix of anticipation and nostalgia. It had been a while since he had seen his nephew, and he was eager to catch up with him. As he entered the room, he found Jude focused on his work, his face stoic and his demeanor professional.

"Hey, Jude," Jordan greeted, a warm smile on his face. "Long time no see. How have you been?"

Jude glanced up from his desk, his expression remaining neutral. "I'm doing fine, thanks," he replied curtly, his voice filled with a hint of reserve.

Jordan nodded, understanding that both he and Jude were not the touchy-feely type, not ones to openly express personal emotions. He decided to move the conversation forward and mentioned, "Oh, by the way, Josiah says hello. He sent some things for you, and I'll drop them off later."

The mention of his father's name brought a flicker of warmth to Jude's eyes. "Thanks, Jordan. I appreciate it," he said sincerely, the gratitude evident in his voice. “How are JT, Jeremiah and Cece doing?” He had met his younger siblings when they were still young, JT the oldest had been just five. It didn’t take long for them to wrap him around their fingers. Cece was the youngest, named after their Aunt Celine. Jude’s stepmother was a friend of Celine’s and Josiahfelt Celine had saved his life by encouraging him to leave Starfleet.

“Those monsters!” Jordan said with a grin. “Cece tried to convince me to let her use me for a makeup demonstration but I turned her down by offering to take her to town. They lived in the country so it was considered a treat. Josiah had PTSD from his work in intelligence so living in the country suits him better.

“Too bad.” Jude grinned. “I would have loved to see pictures of that.” Jordan getting his nails painted would be a sight to see.

“Exactly why I wouldn’t let her.” Jordan growled. “I have a reputation to maintain.” He knew that Jude understood what he was saying. Jude prided himself in in own integrity.

As they settled into a conversation, Jordan couldn't help but notice the state of the base's security. It was in bad shape, and he felt compelled to address the issue. "So, how's the security situation here?" he asked, concern evident in his voice.

Jude sighed, realizing the enormity of the task ahead. "It's not great," he admitted, his voice tinged with frustration. "We've been struggling to get things moving."

Jordan waited, expecting Jude to ask for his help, but when the request didn't come, he decided to offer it himself. "You know, I used to be a security chief. If you need any assistance, I'd be glad to help out in any way I can," he offered, making it clear that he respected Jude's authority.

Jude's gratitude was evident as a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "Thanks, Jordan. I appreciate that," he replied, relieved that his uncle was willing to lend a hand. "But remember, I'm coordinating the work here. You're still my boss."

Jordan nodded, acknowledging Jude's position. He couldn't help but feel a surge of pride for how far Jude had come. From a scared kid thrust into a new home with a father he had never known, Jude had grown into a grounded and capable individual. Jordan knew that he owed a debt of gratitude to Jude's mother, who had been good to him during those tough times. Not all women had the instinct to be nurturing mothers, but she had.

Shifting gears, Jordan asked if Jude had a list of supplies he needed. To his surprise, Jude handed him a pad with a detailed list, complete with the best places to source them from. Jordan was impressed by Jude's thoroughness and commitment to the task at hand.

"I'll make sure to prioritize the order," Jordan promised, impressed by Jude's initiative. "We'll get the base back on track in no time."

Their meeting came to an end, but before parting ways, Jordan couldn't help but offer a reminder. "Don't forget to stop by and see your Uncle Joel and Aunt Celine soon," he said, referring to his own siblings. "They miss you." He smiled then, some thought Celine was the quiet mouse type but he, of all people, knew not to make her upset. She could be like an angry bear protecting her cubs.

Jude smiled and rolled his eyes playfully. "Yeah, I'll make sure to do that. Back home, I was hugged to death. One more won't hurt me," he joked, appreciating the contrasting dynamics between his two families. “I would like to coordinate with the marines as well. I realize they have their deck to get in order but I believe they could be some help in getting rid of the old equipment and it would make our work go faster.”

“It will be Joel you will be meeting with then.” Jordan replied. “The marine commander isn’t here yet but should be at any time. If he gives you any issue, tell him you spoke with me and I said that security is commands number one priority.”

“I appreciate that.” Jude said seriously. They might be family but Jude appreciated how Jordan did not let that influence his position on the base. He handled things as a first officer.

As Jordan left the security office, he couldn't help but feel grateful for the progress Jude had made and the person he had become. He knew that with their combined efforts, they would be able to improve the security of Starbase Obsidian and create a safer environment for everyone. Jordan reflected in his head for a moment at how far Jude had come from the scared kid thrust into a new home with a father he had never known and how grounded he is. Jordan will forever be grateful that Jude’s mother was good to him. Jordan knows first hand that being a mother isn’t an instinct for all women.
