Mission: A New Beginning

On:

Marius strode onto the Command Deck after having been alerted to their approach of the Ocampan homeworld. As he crossed the room towards his chair, he could not help but glance at the viewport as the red planet came into view. He had to admit that despite the harshness he knew the surface held, from space it was certainly beautiful. He noted, with surprised relief that there were no satellites or spacecraft in orbit, which he hoped meant that no one had chosen to take advantage of the surface in the decades since Voyager was here.

"Scan the surface," he ordered. "I want to know if the Kazon are waiting for us down there."

"Aye sir," came the reply. As he waited for an answer he began to think of all the tasks that needed to be accomplished in the immediate future to even begin the process of settling on the planet. Water would be a priority, and an attempt to reach the Ocampa people beneath the surface to discuss it all- if they even could.

"Sir," a voice spoke up- breaking his mental collection of tasks. "I am seeing signs of the Kazon settlements, if you can call them that, but they appear to be abandoned. From what I can tell it has been a long time since anyone was on the surface."

Well that was good news, he thought to himself. Out loud, he said,

"Can you reach the Ocampa?"

"I've tried sir, but if they are even able to hear us, they're not responding. There's a lot of interference."

"I figured as much. We will have to try another way." He tapped his comm badge. "Major Thrace, we have arrived." He glanced over at Jordan, who nodded. "I'd like you and Commander Haines to assemble and away team and go to the surface after we have run a few tests. We need to ensure that the Kazon have indeed vacated the planet for good, attempt to reach the Ocampa, and find a location suitable for us to begin setting up shop- in that order."

"Aye sir," the Marine woman replied. Marius glanced around the room, and sighed. Only time would tell what was waiting for them, but he hoped, for all their sakes, that they could finally rest.
