380 words; about a 2 minute read
Mission:
Obsidian
Location: Hemsleys quarters
Timeline: Lunchtime, between the briefing and the first meetings
Amanda heard her stomach growl when Judith walked into her office. These reports seemed like they were never ending. It wasn't the fun part of her job, but a neccesary part of it. She knew that, and accepted it. It's the job she accepted. "You promised we would have lunch together" Judith said, looking sad at her guardian, in a way only a 6 year old can. "I know sweetheart, I just lost track of time." Closing her terminal, Amanda got up and took Judith's hand. "Lets go home and we'll eat."
A couple of minutes later the two of them entered their quarters on Arcadia. "Why don't you have a seat and I'll replicate us some lunch." As Judith sat down at the dinner table, Amanda made her way over to the replicator. "Computer, two servings of Dutch style apple pancakes with sirup, and two milks"
"Unable to comply, replicators are offline"
"Explain, why are the replicators offline?" Now that they were here, ready to have their lunch, Amanda could feel how hungry she actually was. That morning she skipped breakfast because she was running late. But that might have been a bad idea.
"The replicators are in maintenance mode." the computer replied.
Amanda let out a audible sigh. "Whats wrong Aunti?" Judith inquired. "The replicators are offline. Let me call engineering to see what's going on." She tapped her combadge. "Hemsley to engineering"
"Engineering, Lieutenant Chambers. What can I do for you, lieutenant?"
"I'm trying to get some lunch for my niece and myself. But the replicators are offline."
"Yes, we are performing some much needed maintenance on them at the moment. They will be back on line in an hour."
"Ration packs it is then, thank you. Hemsley out." Amanda tapped her combadge to close the channel. "I'm sorry, no replicators. So we'll have to make due with ration packs right now." Amanda grabbed the last two ration packs she had in her quarters. 'I have to remember to order some more, just in case. '
Lunch wasn't all that tasty. Ration packs were a neccesary evil, nothing more. Nobody liked them, and for good reason. but they got the job done. With a filled stomach, Amanda headed back to sickbay, leaving Judith to clean up her bedroom.
