Mission: Obsidian
On:
Captain Marius Pontmercy strode through the dimly lit corridors of the USS Arcadia, his footsteps echoing against the metallic floor. It was late at night, the ship quiet save for the soft hum of engines and the occasional beep of consoles as he strode by. He couldn't help but feel a twinge of annoyance as he made his way to Ten-Forward, the ship's primary gathering place for off-duty crew members. The replicators on Starbase Obsidian were still out of commission, forcing him to seek sustenance aboard the Arcadia.
As he entered Ten-Forward, Marius scanned the room, noting the few crew members scattered about, lost in their own thoughts or conversations. His eyes landed on a solitary figure sitting at a table near the viewport. Erin Couldis was engrossed in her meal, her expression a mixture of weariness and determination.
Surprised to see someone else dining at this hour, Marius hesitated for a moment before deciding to approach her. He weaved through the tables until he stood beside her, clearing his throat to announce his presence.
"Good evening, Lieutenant Couldis," he greeted, offering a polite nod.
Erin looked up, momentarily startled before recognizinghim, so lost she had been in her thoughts.
"Oh, Captain Pontmercy," she said, a hint of surprise in her voice. "I wasn't expecting to see you here."
Marius smiled faintly. "Likewise. May I join you?" Erin gestured to the empty seat across from her.
"Of course, Captain."
Taking the offered seat, Marius glanced around the room, noting the subdued atmosphere. "Late night for both of us, it seems," he remarked, trying to strike up a conversation.
Erin nodded, her gaze briefly flickering towards the viewport. "Yes, just finishing up some supply lists and crew requests. It has been a difficult few days.."
Marius nodded in understanding, his mind briefly drifting to the ongoing repairs on Starbase Obsidian. "I can relate. We are all trying to makenit through. I'll look forward to seeing that report."
Erin nodded again, taking a small bite and chewing before speaking.
"We need a lot, unfortunately. The Science Department was pretty much wiped out."
"Well get me that list and hopefully we can fix that," Marius said.
Their conversation drifted to the challenges they faced in their respective departments. Erin spoke passionately about the cleanup and repair efforts in the science department, Marius listened intently, impressed by her dedication and resilience in the face of adversity.
As they continued to chat, the topic shifted to their experiences on Starbase Zenith. Despite the horrors that they had faced, Erin still spoke fondly of her time there, recounting the friendships she had forged and the sense of camaraderie among the crew members. Marius couldn't help but feel a pang of regret at having missed out on those moments, having kept himself apart as the Commanding Officer.
"It sounds like you've settled in quite nicely," Marius remarked, genuine curiosity coloring his tone. "How are you finding life on the base?"
Erin smiled, a hint of nostalgia in her eyes. "It's been an adjustment, for sure. But overall, I'm enjoying it. There's a sense of community on the base that I haven't experienced in a long time."
Marius nodded, silently marveling at Erin's resilience and adaptability. "I'm glad to hear that. It's important to find a sense of belonging, especially in such challenging environments."
Their conversation drifted to lighter topics as they exchanged stories about their past experiences and shared memories from their time together in the Zenith. Despite the years that had passed since they last saw each other, Marius found himself drawn to Erin's warmth and sincerity.
As they finished their meals, Marius rose from his seat, a sense of gratitude washing over him. "Thank you for the company, Ensign Couldis. It was a pleasure catching up with you."
Erin smiled warmly, her eyes reflecting genuine appreciation. "Likewise, Captain Pontmercy. It's been too long since we last spoke. We'll have to do it again soon."
With a nod of farewell, Marius left Ten-Forward, feeling lighter than he had in weeks. Despite the challenges they faced, he found solace in the camaraderie of his fellow crew members and the unexpected connections forged in the midst of adversity. And as he returned to his duties aboard the Obsidian, he couldn't shake the feeling of gratitude for having crossed paths with Erin once again.
