Mission: Out from the Ashes
On:
Master Chief De Bruinhiena flicked his hears as he looked down at his watch. Sure, most people preferred carrying around datapads, but there was something about an analogue watch that he found fairly soothing. It might also help that he'd gotten it as a gift from a previous Commander, but that was beside the point. His eyes watched as the second hand ticked away, and his brain with through the count down. "Three... two... one..." He mumbled to himself as all the lights went off at once, just to nearly immediately turn back on again.
There wasn't any lying in that the Hienian's heart skipped a beat for a moment. Considering a hard computer reset on a ship wasn't exactly a normal thing to do outside of a major overhaul at a major starbase, but it wasn't as if they'd been given a great deal of options. Sometimes, ship computers decided to be ornery. On the bright side, it hadn't tried to kill anyone. Yet. As systems went through their restarts, the Master Chief's combadge finally began to chime. A good sign. A very. VERY. Good sign.
"This is Senior Chief," K'Ral replied.
"Oh good! You can finally hear me," Chief Anderson said, the sound of relief in his voice. "Damn thing finally accepted the update."
The Master Chief let out a massive sigh. "About damn time."
"I'd give it... 10 minutes to get everything re-synced. Hopefully the Old Man will finally have the real honey do list and not the one he got three days ago." The human on the transmitting end chuckled.
"I'll give him a call."
Captain Michaels heard the chirp on his comm badge, and tapped it.
"Go ahead," he said.
"We just did the hard reset, sir. Were you able to update your datapad?" The Master Chief Inquired. Alexander frowned and looked down at his datapadd.
"Just a moment," he said. He tapped the command, and then his padd began to flood with new information. "Apparently that worked. I'm seeing it now. Tell me why was this necessary?"
"Honestly, sir? Sometimes you have to turn it off and on again to get an update to install. If I had to guess, it probably was a line or two of code that didn't agree with the previous updates. To be frank, this isn't the first time I've seen something like this happen. Had the same issue on the Blackhawk during the Dominion War. Luckily, the info we got this time wasn't casualty reports." There was a definate sombre tone in the old Chief's voice. Noting that, Michaels didn't press, but sighed.
"Well thank you for figuring it out. This is the worst time we could have something like this happen. I would appreciate you staying on top of it and ensuring that nothing like this happens again."
“I’ll do my best, sir. From the sound of things, we’ve got most things wrapped up. Just a few tweaks here and there, but the Arcadia’s purring like a well fed cat again,” The Mastet Chief said with a smile. Maybe, after all these years, he’d finally figured out Earther slang. “I’ll let you know if there’s anything on the E side.”
"I appreciate that. We are about to embark on the away mission, and truthfully it is a relief to not be worrying about what is happening on the ship as well. In all my years commanding Starships, I feel the most unprepared here onboard the Arcadia. It is dangerous, and not at all how I like to run things."
“Well, if you take everything into consideration; all the repairs and retrofits, you’ve basically got yourself a ship that’s fresh out of dry dock and hasn’t gone through her sea trials and shake downs yet, but things should level out here soon. Need me to do anything while you’re gone, sir? Leave the light on? Make sure the mess has a cup of coffee for you?”
"I'd like you to work with Eschanauer, I'm leaving him in charge. Please make sure that he has everything he needs, and I wouldn't mind that cup of coffee when I return." Alexander stood.
"Of course, sir. I'll make sure the LT keeps his eyes on the road. Any requests when it comes to coffee?"
"The blacker, the better," Alexander said with a tired smile. "I can't seem to get enough of it these days."
"Man after my own heart," the Chief snickered, though he really preferred a double double, but some days a good plain coffee the color of a black hole did hit the spot. "I had a feeling we'd get along. I'll make sure the mess has a cup waiting for you, sir." Michaels laughed, and sighed.
"Thank you, Master Chief. I appreciate that. You're dismissed," he said, giving the MCPO one last tired smile before returning to his work.
