Mission: Obsidian
On:
Marius had only spent a few hours each day in his quarters, knowing that there was still so much work to do. After showering, he quickly dressed and stopped in front of the mirror as he combed his hair. Even in war time, he felt that personal hygiene was important. While some would disagree, he felt that decorum, respect, and how one presented themselves were things you just do not let slip away. Finally satisfied, he exited his quarters, and headed for Ops.
A few moments later, he walked into the main open arena, and nodded to the officers on duty.
"Anything to report," he asked? The ensign to his left smiled tiredly.
"Not in the past four hours, sir." Marius laughed.
"That's good at least. As you were," he said. He turned and entered his ready room, knowing that Jordan would be there in a few moments for their daily meeting.
Jordan walked in a couple minutes later, a cup in his hand. As he sat down he spoke. “I was off helping Jude and Mike with the shields. My nephew believes in hard work.” He laughed then. “I believe I frustrate him.”
"Is this coming as a surprise to you," Marius said dryly?
“No.” Jordan shook his head. “He is a good officer and plays by the rules.” He sat back. “Do you want the good news or the bad first.” Marius sighed, not liking the sound of that.
"I guess hit me with the bad news."
“It will be ten days before we have shields and weapons.” Jordan replied. “I spoke with Chambers and he said we cannot use replicated parts if we want it to hold up long term.” His eyes met Marius’. “It may seem like he is being difficult but McMahon concurs with him. We need to know we can count on the shields.” Marius let out his breath in a huff as be processed that news.
"Ten days," he muttered. He supposed it could be worse, but he didn't like the feeling of sitting unprotected.
"Well if that's the case, I want the Arcadia running patrols until the shields are activated. What's the good news?"
"Weapons will be done in six." Jordan said with a smile. "Jude is one step ahead of you. He already made the same suggestion and I went ahead and scheduled them as I knew you would agree." He waited to see what the captain had for him. Marius nodded, this news pleased him.
"I know that we have a long way to go, but I'll feel better when we can defend ourselves." He shifted slightly in his chair, his back sore from the hours spent sitting at this very desk over the past few days. "I spoke with Starfleet Command, they are sending us some additional Engineers and support staff to assist in the repairs, as well as the USS Franklin to aid in our protection. I would like you to coordinate with them when it arrives tomorrow. When we eventually are ready to move the base, the Franklin will be here to offer assistance before returning to Earth."
Jordan nodded. “So the move is a reality.” He didn’t have an opinion either way. If someone was coming after them it would be up to them to defend themselves.”
"Eventually, if we can find somewhere that makes sense. Honestly right now I'm more concerned with the defense of the base." He looked at Jordan, assuming he had more to say in it. "Out with it. I've known you for long enough to know that you aren't finished."
“I’m good with the base move.” Jordan began. “But I believe we need to really investigate where the best place to move it to and the bottom line is your decision. The crew is going to have multiple ideas.” He paused. “And my opinion, before we start hauling it we need to have shields and weapons operational.” Marius nodded in agreement.
"Absolutely," he said. "I am looking currently for an appropriate spot, but will speak more about it to the Senior Staff at our next briefing. No matter what happens, we needed to be able to defend ourselves before something like that is undertaken." He looked at his Executive Officer.
"How are you, Commander? How are you settling back in to being an XO again?"
“Honestly.” Jordan said seriously. “Like I never left. We have new and old crew mixed in and I believe it will make for a nice dynamics.” He looked directly at him. “And you?” Marius thought for a moment before replying.
"Honestly,... it is strange. It feels like the old days, especially with you and Mike and the others around, but at the same time...not. This war has taken so much."
“It has changed us all.” Jordan knew above all others he could trust Marius. “I worked for Intelligence after we all split up. I was in so deep I wasn’t certain I could ever come out and be the same again.” He paused. “That is between us.”
"Of course." Marius would never share something that personal that was shared with him...from anyone. "I appreciate your confidence."
“Admiral Bradley would kick my ass for telling you.” Jordan’s said, “But I gave you my word no secrets and I meant it.” Marius was impressed, and he was sure that it showed on his face.
"This is a side of you I am not used to," he admitted. "But I have to say, I am glad to see it. You've grown, Jordan."
“No one is.” Jordan smiled at him. “There are things about me I doubt will ever change but some things make sense like this.” He paused. “Any orders from above?”
"Stay the course. They are sending us a team of Engineers to assist with the repairs, they will be here in the morning. Other than that, it is business as usual until we hear otherwise."
“Good to know, Captain,” Jordan smiled as he stood. “I’ll go back and see if Jude and Mikey need my help if you are done?” Pontmercy nodded.
"I'll keep you updated," he said as the man left his ready room.
