Mission: Obsidian
Charlotte was, despite rank and department, fairly used to being in command on the bridge of a starship. The Arcadia was cruising along fairly nicely as it headed home. Charlotte's thoughts were in several different places, she looked up as Ruby walked onto the bridge, the girl might have only been thirteen but she had apparently become a frequent presence on the bridge, usually sitting at an auxiliary console. "Miss Starling." Charlotte said after glancing around the bridge for a moment.
"Yes?" Ruby asked
"Take the helm?" Charlotte said, there was a moment of silence at the suggestion before Ruby slowly made her way over to the helm console and relieved the ensign working there. "Ok." Charlotte said "So if you're going to learn the basics you need practical experience at stations. You know how to monitor course and speed?"
"Yep." Ruby said pointing at the displays on the console "Course shown here and speed here."
"Currently?" Charlotte asked
"Bound for Starbase eleven at warp five." Ruby said
"Take us to warp seven." Charlotte said
"Warp seven." Ruby said sliding the throttle for want of a better term forwards.
"Remember to watch your sensors." Charlotte said "What have you got on them?"
"There's a Reliant class, an Inquiry class and a pair of Ross classes at mid range." Ruby said looking at the display on the helm console "Long range has a New Orleans and a Prometheus."
"And any non Federation signals?" Charlotte asked
"Nothing beyond the usual traffic towards the Ferengi border." Ruby said
"Good." Charlotte said ruffling Ruby's hair which made the girl giggle a little "Maintain course and speed."
Ruby nodded and smiled, much as she was nervous about being sat there at the helm she also knew that if she wanted a career in Starfleet she was going to have to get familiar with how a ship operated and there was no real better time to start than this.
