Mission: Obsidian

The shuttle emerged from warp, the familiar sight of Starbase Obsidian coming into view. Ensign Derek Harker leaned forward in his seat, eyes wide with anticipation. The massive structure floated serenely against the backdrop of the cosmos, its sleek design a testament to Starfleet's engineering prowess.

As the shuttle maneuvered closer, Derek's thoughts raced. This was his first assignment to a Starbase, a chance to prove himself and make a name in Starfleet. He was ready.

The docking procedure was smooth, the shuttle gliding into the bay with practiced ease. Derek gathered his duffel bag, filled with the essentials he’d need to settle into his new home. As the hatch opened, he stepped onto the deck, taking a deep breath of the recycled air. It smelled faintly of ozone and metal—a scent he’d come to associate with adventure.

A lieutenant approached, clipboard in hand. "Ensign Harker?" she asked, her tone professional but warm.

"Yes, ma'am," Derek replied, standing a bit straighter.

"Welcome to Starbase Obsidian. I'm Lieutenant Nia Chang. I'll be showing you around and helping you get settled." She offered a small smile, and Derek felt a surge of gratitude.

"Thank you, ma'am. I'm looking forward to getting started."

As they walked through the corridors, Lieutenant Chang pointed out various sections of the station. "This is the security center, where you'll be spending a lot of your time. Over here is the mess hall, and just down this way are the crew quarters."

Derek absorbed the information, mentally mapping out the layout. The starbase was bustling with activity—officers and crew members moving with purpose, voices mingling in a harmonious blend of conversation and orders.

Finally, they arrived at his quarters. The door slid open with a soft hiss, revealing a modest but comfortable space. A small window offered a view of the stars, and a desk was neatly arranged with a terminal and a few basic supplies.

"I'll let you get settled," Lieutenant Chang said. "If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

"Thank you, Lieutenant. I appreciate it."

Once alone, Derek took a moment to explore his quarters, unpacking his belongings and arranging them with care. He placed a photo of his parents, James and Elizabeth Harker, on the desk. Their smiling faces were a comforting reminder of home.

He activated the terminal and composed a quick message to Admiral Chris Bradley, the man who had given him this opportunity.

To: Admiral Chris Bradley

Thank you for this opportunity. I am eager to begin my duties and contribute to the success of Starbase Obsidian.

Respectfully,

Ensign Derek Harker
